Four Anti-Aging Foods for Skin

Are you tired of using expensive creams to improve the appearance of your skin? Why not nourish your skin from the inside instead? Here are four good foods for the prevention of skin aging.

In an attempt to get beautiful skin, many people fall prey to the slick advertising campaigns created by cosmetic companies. They would have you believe that the key to healthy, younger looking skin lies in purchasing an expensive skin care cream. In most cases, these creams don't live up to their promises. Instead of using jars of overpriced cream to get younger looking skin, why not nurture your skin from the inside? Here are four good foods for skin that won't cost you a fortune:

Miso

Miso is a thick paste made from fermented soybeans. It's also rich source of genistein, a component that has estrogen-like properties on the skin. Studies have shown that genistein applied topically increases production of hyaluronic acid, a natural skin component which helps to preserve skin texture and elasticity. Women in Japan who consume miso on a daily basis are known for their youthful skin and lack of wrinkles even at an advanced age. At least one study has shown that women who added miso to their diet on a daily basis for several months showed improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One of the easiest ways to enjoy the skin benefits of miso is to have a daily cup of miso soup. Miso can be found in most health food stores and natural food markets.

Salmon

The potential for salmon to improve the appearance of skin was brought to light by Nicholas Perricone M.D. in his popular book, The Wrinkle Cure. Salmon is thought to have positive benefits on the skin due to its high concentration of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega-3-fatty acids are thought to block the inflammatory response which can cause skin damage and the appearance of wrinkles and loose skin. Salmon also has a component called DMAE which may help to increase skin firmness. When adding salmon to your diet, choose wild salmon rather than farm raised whenever possible to reduce the risk of exposure to PCB's and other toxins.

Walnuts

Walnuts are another good source of omega-3-fatty acids which can help decrease inflammation and, possibly skin aging. Omega-3-fatty acids have been shown in studies to prevent skin aging caused by sun exposure. Although they may not be a substitute for sunscreen, they do offer an additional layer of protection against U.V. damage.

Olive oil

Olive oil is another food with anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to an ingredient known as oleocanthal. It's also is an excellent free radical scavenger due to its high polyphenol content. Free radicals are thought to play a role in skin aging by destroying collagen, the major support structure of skin. Olive oil can even be used topically as a moisturizing agent. It should be avoided in areas prone to oil or acne outbreaks.

Yes, it's encouraging to know that help for aging skin may be as close as your grocery store. Why not add some of these good skin foods to your diet?
