Motherhood is one of the most difficult, yet rewarding, jobs in the world. For some of us, we may stay at home with our children while others may leave for work. Either way we are still working around the clock, year round. Motherhood gives us purpose, fulfills our need to nurture. Yet, there are still times when mothers want to relax. We want to be free, to come home, kick our feet up and rest. But this isn't always possible. They need us, regardless of age. From birth to eighteen and then some, we are mothers.
Motherhood means taking care of petty things, sometimes refereeing inevitable fights. We make decisions for who does what, when and where. We are many times mother, father, and disciplinarian. Chores are a mother's favorite. We dust, we vacuum, we mop, and we cook. Laundry is always fun. We help with homework and baths. We take care of boo-boos and play nurse to the sick. And just when we think our job is done, we find ourselves running back and forth to the doctor, to the dentist, to ball practices and games, to sleepovers and to the store. We do all of these things because we are supposed to.
Motherhood is not for everyone. In fact, it takes a lot of strength to do what we do every day. Parenthood is not easy, even under the best of circumstances. Mothers know this. That's why there are times when we may go without a meal. Perhaps wait for that new bra. Money is tight after all. We understand the meaning of sacrifice, whether we are stay-at-home moms or working elsewhere. We simply do what needs to be done for the sake of our children.
Motherhood means putting off adult activities. So yes, Dad must sometimes wait just a little while longer for our time. Of course, by then, we're usually beat. Too tired to play or have any fun. Sleep comes easily but never long enough. Tomorrow is another day. There will be more work, more fights, more laundry, more running. It never ends. But in the end, if ever there is one; motherhood is worth every teardrop lost, every floor paced, and every struggle undertaken. Look into the eyes of any child. Motherhood is love.
