Every once in a while, a brand new fashion trend captures the attention of style conscious people and as we look back over the past five decades, some of these new designs have proved to be exceptional. Some for the good and others not so much. The mini-skirt introduced by Mary Quant in the 1960s was among the more notable of fashion styles as was the platform sole of the 1970s. These were fashion styles welcomed by some and treated with disdain by others.
Inventing brand new fashion styles that are genuinely unique is one sure way to make a fortune but in most cases, "new" styles are really just variations of other well established fashion items. Creating something truly exclusive would take some real imagination. Finding an item of clothing, a type of shoe or even just a fashion accessory would require some creativity along with the confidence to pursue the idea into the market.
Fashion designers pride themselves on coming up with new ideas but often, their creations are no more than a vain attempt to be different from the mainstream. Some of the new fashion styles presented by so-called top designers are simply stupid and would never be worn by real people in real situations. Outrageous styles that receive plaudits on the catwalks of Paris and Milan are just too ridiculous for words.
Now if someone could come up with a brand new garment, one that has never been seen before, they could retire with their millions as the fashion conscious people around them fall over themselves for this special item. How about a decorative knee band for women? Or a chain for men that links from ear to ear? Who knows what nonsensical items people will buy in the name of fashion.
There are numerous trends that were at one time highly popular at one time, but are no more. People in their 50s or 60s now look back with horror at some of the garish styles they wore with pride as teenagers. Styles they wouldn't dare admit to if it were not for the photographic evidence. The fact is though, that garish as these styles may have been, they were new and people jumped on them at the time.
Some things never change and there are still plenty of people out there who will grab the chance of wearing something brand new in the fashion world, regardless of how stupid it may seem in years to come.
